Knoll Classics – The Richard Schultz Collection

16/05/2022

When Florence Knoll moved to Florida, she asked for outdoor furniture suitable for the tropical climate of the Southeast coast of the United States.

The high salinity levels of a coastal territory require a highly resistant outdoor furniture.

In the late 1960s, Florence Knoll, founder with her husband Hans G. Knoll of the furniture brand of the same name, challenged her furniture designers. Richard Schultz was on the team, at the time as an assistant to Harry Bertoia. Upon receiving this request, he designed a line of aluminium furniture, with straight and sober lines.

The Aluminium Leisure collection, later to became known as the Richard Schultz collection, would remain an icon of Modernism in furniture design. The sunloungers, chairs and tables of the collection can be found at Knoll’s catalogue.

In 2012, the brand acquired the exclusive production rights of the author’s pieces. The Richard Schultz Outdoor Collection is one of the most elegant outdoor collections in the history of furniture.
