Cassina revives Gerrit T. Rietveld’s Utrecht quintessential armchair

14/09/2018

The Utrecht armchair, signed by the famous Dutch architect, was originally conceived in 1935 for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam, and has been in production by Cassina since 1988.

It integrates the brand’s “I Maestri” collection.

Gerrit T. Rietveld, together with Piet Mondrian and other Dutch artists, is at the origin of the important early twentieth century avant-garde movement De Stijl (meaning “new art”).

Rietveld re-invented the structure of chairs and other objects and built them as constructivist sculptures, using of primary colours and depurated forms.

In 2016 the Dutch designer Bertjand Pot designed a limited collection of fabrics for the Utrecht armchair, imprinting a new dynamic to the 1930s aesthetics.

The Utrecht armchair is on display at QuartoSala stores.
