The Pipistrello is a design icon, created by one of the most important Italian designers of the 20th century, Gae Aulenti.
This lamp holds iconic status not necessarily because it was designed in the 1960s, but because it has passed the test of time with flying colors.
The Pipistrello lamp features a conical aluminum base, a telescopic satin steel stand that is adjustable in height, and an opal white methacrylate diffuser from which a diffuse, warm light emanates.
Gae Aulenti originally designed the Pipistrello in 1965. The Italian brand Martinelli Luce, founded in the 1930s, first published the model in the same year it was created. The Pipistrello has never left the brand's catalog and has become part of the permanent collections of some of the most important design museums around the world.
In 2014, a dimmable LED version was introduced. Today, Gae Aulenti’s lamp is available in about 10 finishes, including a limited edition in 24k gold-plated. It currently comes in two sizes and features a wireless version and another 4.0 version with color regulation via smartphone.
