The extraction of cork from oak trees is a tradition that dates back hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Today, Portugal is the world's leading producer of cork, with sustainable practices that ensure the longevity and health of the cork oak trees for future generations.
The cork of a champagne bottle is the inspiration for this series, first seen at an exhibition held in London in 2012 at the Serpentine Gallery, a joint project of the Herzog & de Meuron Architecture Studio and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.
The Corker seat or side table recently saw the addition of a third piece to the series.
Cork has unique properties which give it an unrivalled character. It is light, elastic and compressible, at the same time resilient and versatile, which is soft to the touch, and has a temperature very close to that of the human body.
